Three more albums with Mobb Deep came out in the 2000s, but in 2007, Prodigy was sentenced to three and a half years in prison on a firearms charge. Mobb Deep put out two more albums in the ’90s, and Prodigy dropped his first solo LP, H.N.I.C., in 2000 that album showed off his emergent conscious side. Mobb Deep’s first album arrived in 1993, followed in 1995 by The Infamous, a groundbreaking East Coast hip-hop album that helped set the scene’s menacing vibe. He met Kejuan Waliek Muchita, later known as Mobb Deep’s other half Havoc, while the two were classmates at New York City’s High School of Art and Design in the early ’90s. Born Albert Johnson in Hempstead, NY, in 1974, Prodigy came from a family of musicians. "Wow, that sounds like Miles Davis is playing".Prodigy helped shape New York rap in the 1990s and beyond, both as a solo artist and as a member of the legendary duo Mobb Deep. She was commenting on her trumpet synth solo while she was playing it as if she were a listener. Actually, for me that illustrated the detachment that these prodigies have with their music. Did you hear her fast two handed keyboard solo on Maiden Voyage? Derek's jazz playing is pretty awfull, he is fast but he just runs scales without saying anything.ĭid you notice Rachel kept saying things like "I love this song, it's so beautiful", she perhaps feels the music more than Derek.ĭid you notice Rachel kept saying things like "I love this song, it's so beautiful", she perhaps feels the music more than Derek. The girl however had a much more human approach.Ĭarl I agree, except I think Rachel actualy had more jazz chops than Derek. There seemed to be no humanity in their approach. For lack of a better way of putting it, he and the boy play roboticly. However, there was just something missing for me that dosen't turn my head. I think that Derek the 24 year old had the more amazing chops and abilities. That's NOT to say that she was the most talented of the three. If she made an album I would probably buy it. I thought that all the playing was very impressive by all the prods, but I'm not so sure that I'd ever consume anything from any of them (as far as recordings or tickets). When her teacher made the claim that she was self taught and only playing for five months, well, I just, well. I too was very impressed with the girl's solo flute playing. Thanks to my DVR, I was able to rewind to the beginning and catch the whole thing. Interestingly enough I stumbled upon this story as well. But man, if that kid can do that consistently that is flippin amazin!!Ĩ notes at a time, I could see. I know reporters will selectively choose facts to make their story, well, a STORY. The cynic in me still rears his ugly head. Yet he couldn't count to three or dress himself. Usually, the playing of these savant prodigies is not as wonderful as the reporter imagines, and not even up to average professional standards (though it may be better than your uncle Harry can play).Īnd we all know that the really great composers and performers through the ages generally had the ability to read, write, and brush their teeth.īut this one dude, man, could repeat up to TEN NOTES that Lesley Stahl played simultaneously on a keyboard! Random notes - like throwing a book at the keys. And the skill is much more common among professional musicians, and not even all of them work on that particular thing. But that means there are 3,000 people in the US who can do it, and it's not as if everybody in the country is working on developing that skill. For instance, they'll quote statistics that "only one person in 100,000" or something will be able to do such and such (hear a tune and play it back. Usually, my reaction to these unfortunate individuals is that their musical "genius" is greatly exagerated.
